〜に行く
Verb stem + に + 行く = "go to do ~" — went to buy an umbrella.

Practice 〜に行く →The pattern is place + へ + object + V-stem + に行きます: go somewhere in order to do something. デパートへ names the destination, 靴を is the object of buying, 買いに (masu-stem of 買う + に) states the purpose, and 行きます closes it. Any fragment other than デパートへ in the first slot breaks the destination → object → purpose → verb chain.
