「を兼ねて」shows the single outing doubled as both a walk and a shopping trip.

Practice 〜を兼ねて →〜を兼ねて attaches to a noun to mean "combining with / also serving as," used when one action fulfills two purposes at once. Going to the neighborhood store accomplished both exercise and errands. に比べて sets up a comparison, に限って restricts the trip to a single purpose, and を通じて makes the walk an instrument rather than a parallel purpose.
