How it's used

〜てみる means trying an action to see how it goes: 聞いてみた = "I tried asking." 分からなかったので shows the asking was an attempt to resolve confusion. ておいた is advance preparation, てしまった would frame asking the teacher as regrettable, and てきた implies going somewhere to ask and returning — this sentence describes a simple attempt, not movement.
