Practice 〜ながら →〜ながら attaches to a verb's masu-stem to mark a simultaneous background action, so 話し and ながら must be adjacent: みんなで話しながら 'while we all talked.' The main clause follows as one intact unit — the object 昼ご飯を beside its verb 食べました — giving みんなで話しながら昼ご飯を食べました 'We ate lunch while talking together.' ★ sits between the stem 話し and the object phrase, and only ながら can bridge them without splitting the main clause.
